Back Pain in Lexington
There's a myriad of causes for back pain. The core structure, the spine, is a complex structure, which has to absorb stress from constant varying loads, while permitting physical movement. In the vast majority of cases in Lexington, back pain is caused by a bone in the spine becoming misaligned. Just like a car, the mechanical components of the spine, the vertebral bodies, have to stay aligned so they can move correctly, and absorb the intense physical stress that our spine has to endure. When a bone, or vertebral body becomes misaligned, the mechanics of the spine start to dysfunction and spinal motion is affected. This can cause pain. The longer you have spinal dysfunction and pain, the more spinal deterioration can occur. This can cause the spinal components, the joints and discs, and vertebral bodies, to prematurely break down. This is called arthritis. Guess what...once you get spinal arthritis, it's there forever. Think of a car's tire that is out of alignment. If you didn't fix it, the tire would degrade prematurely, and then you'd have to replace it! Well, you can't replace the components to your spine! So, the moral of this story is to get your spine checked on occasion to make sure it stays tuned up.
Sometimes back pain is caused by trauma, such as a car accident. Dr. Mike at LifeStyle Chiropractic in Lexington Kentucky, has over 20 years experience with clinical problems and diagnosing them. Ask yourself, do you want your problem to be found and taken care of, or do you want it to develop into a serious lifelong condition?
Disc Bulges or Herniations:
One of the most common causes of back pain in Lexington is a disc bulge or a disc herniation. MRI studies have shown that as much as 37% of the American population has a disc bulge or herniation, and the vast majority of them experience no pain. Unfortunately, the people who are experiencing pain often describe it as severe and intense. The type of pain that is experienced due to a disc herniation depends on the type and degree of the herniation. If the damaged disc is irritating a surrounding nerve, shooting pain and weakness into the legs may develop. The back and/or leg pain is often described as stabbing or electrical shock type pain.
To better understand a disc herniation, it is probably easiest to think of the disc as a jelly doughnut. If the outer edges of the doughnut (disc) are damaged over time, via injury, or chronic vertebral misalignments, or from wear and tear, the jelly in the middle of the doughnut/disc starts to ooze out. Once this process has started it is difficult to reverse. However, chiropractic care has been shown to prevent the advancement of the herniation and provide relief from the associated pain.
Subluxations are one of the most commonly overlooked contributors to back pain. Subluxation is a medical term used to describe a vertebra in our spine that is out of position, or misaligned. When these subluxations occur, normal spinal mechanical motion becomes dysfunctional, and bad things start happening. Subluxations in Lexington can occur anywhere in the spine and they can happen frequently. There's a myriad of causes for subluxations, ranging from physical trauma and stress, to playing sports, and just everyday living. Remember that the spinal column is under load all the time. The time frame to correct subluxations varies by the individual. Doctors of Chiropractic are the only professionally trained individuals that can correct these devastating subluxations.
Muscular Sprains and Tendon or Ligament Strains:
Strains are caused when a muscle or tendon is stretched beyond it physiological capacity. A sprain happens when a ligament is stretched beyond its physiological capacity. Strains and sprains are actually tears in the respective tissue. Muscular strains are commonly caused by lifting too heavy of an object and/or twisting motions. Strains and sprains of the ligaments and muscles in the back can be extremely painful and are often accompanied by swelling, extreme tenderness, and maybe even bruising of the surrounding area. Strains and sprains are intimately intertwined with the spine and therefore typically respond well to chiropractic care. At LifeStyle Chiropractic, we are equipped to provide treatment for these type injuries.
Stress and Back Pain
People who are chronically under stress in Lexington have a very different physiological profile then those who are not. When our bodies are under intense stress, it releases various stress hormones to adapt to the situation. Some of the adaptive mechanisms include; an elevated heart rate, an increased blood pressure, an altered immune system, decreased bone density, and decreased muscle mass. If this response is prolonged, elevated stress levels have been shown to contribute to the development of heart disease, digestive issues, depression, obesity, and back pain. All of the tension produced by the stress hormones causes a contraction of muscle tissue that produces “trigger points”. Stress is a big contributor to subluxations too, causing physiological changes in the body that result in spinal vertebrae becoming misaligned. Dr. Mike at LifeStyle Chiropractic will consult with you about stress.
